The District derives its name from its headquarters town, which was previously Tehsil headquarters of Multan district. It was created in June 1976. However, literally Vehari means low lying settlement by a flood water channel. This is also an actual fact as portion of the district lies along the right bank of the river Sutlej which forms its southern boundary.
This District was established in 1976.It has an area of 4364 Sq KM and a Population of 27153680 (Estimated:2005)
The district has a mixed population. The number is almost equally divided into the old settled tribes and the new settlers. The main occupation is agriculture. The people in general are peace loving and the district is safe from old feuds.
The land is very fertile and a little above 90% area is under cultivation. Hot and dry climate is suitable for Cotton cultivation which is the major cash crop of the District. Vehari is known for having produced more Cotton than the entire province of Sind. Wheat and Sugarcane are also cultivated and it is the mainstay of majority of the population.
